New smart wheel could prevent trucks from overturning

Axicle is designing a fifth wheel for trucks, which will transform the heavy transport industry and save many lives

The new product, designed by the Axicle company, is a smart wheel that could automatically detach from the truck trailer at the time of an accident or overturning of the cargo car, avoiding injury and death of its driver.

Additionally, the wheel would have locking systems that guarantee an expeditious coupling, even at high speeds. It includes intelligent sensors that allow the collection of information on the wind, load and vibrations of the fleet, facilitating efficient logistical decision-making.

With this proposal, the Axicle company hopes to transform the heavy-duty automotive market since there is no other technology capable of completely eliminating the rollovers of autonomous or driver-assisted vehicles.

Saving lives

With the use of the fifth wheel, the company estimates that 400 lives could be saved annually and more than 9,000 injuries and deaths that are occurring in the United States each year as a result of truck overturns would be avoided.

On the other hand, these accidents generate a significant expenditure of financial resources for organizations. Currently the expenses are on the order of 3.5 billion dollars in the payment of insurance for injuries and deaths caused in accidents. That is why the company believes that it would not only save the lives of drivers, but also generate savings of the order of 25 % per year in equipment and liability costs.
