Computer scientists discover malicious application on Google Play

Google Play hosted another malicious application designed to steal cryptocurrencies from end users

The malicious application called Clipper masqueraded as a legitimate cryptocurrency tool and replaced the user’s wallet address with developer-controlled addresses. The addresses were copied to the Android clipboard.

As a result of the attack, people who intended to use the application to transfer digital coins to their wallet would deposit the funds in wallets belonging to the scammers.

The malware available on Google Play supplanted a service called MetaMask that is designed to allow browsers to run applications that work with the ethereum cryptographic currency.

For security, people must limit the amount of applications they install on their computers. One way to verify the legitimacy of a platform is to visit independently the site of the team that supposedly developed the application.
