Firefox suspends Send function, used for cyber attacks

Mozilla developers claimed that criminals used this service to distribute malware during hacks

Mozilla temporarily suspended the Send function of its Firefox browser, which allows it to store and share files with other Internet users, after discovering that cybercriminals used it to distribute ‘malware’ in their attacks.

Firefox Send is an online tool that was launched in 2019, available to users of the Mozilla browser but also to others through its web version, which stores files in encrypted form and allows them to be shared with other people through download links.

According to ZDNet, this function was used by various groups of cybercriminals such as Ursnif and REVil to store and spread their malware campaigns, like Dreambot and Sodinokibi, respectively.

To avoid attacks, the developer company said it will “temporarily disable Firefox Send” while making “product improvements.”

Before restoring the service, Mozilla promised to introduce a new “mechanism to report abuse” in Firefox Send.
