In an email to employees, LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky explained that the company is seeing changes in customer behavior and slower revenue growth.

The company intends to refocus its global business organization for the next phase of growth through increased agility and growth heading into fiscal year 2024, including reorganizing how work gets done, increasing agility, and aligning teams for growth.

In this way, LinkedIn will remove layers from the organization, reducing management roles and expanding responsibilities to make decisions faster, while investing in profitable growth opportunities and ensuring they have the right roles for the work required. It means both the reduction of roles and the opening of more than 250 new positions in specific segments, new businesses and account management teams starting May 15.

On the other hand, the company has announced that it will focus its strategy in China on helping companies that operate in the Asian giant to hire, market and train abroad, which will mean maintaining the Talent, Marketing and Learning businesses, while phase out InCareer, the local employment app in China, by August 9, 2023.

“While InCareer had some success last year thanks to our strong China-based team, it was also met with fierce competition and a challenging macroeconomic climate,” Roslansky acknowledged.

LinkedIn had already withdrawn the local version of its portal for China in 2021 due to “a significantly more challenging operating environment and higher compliance requirements” in the Asian giant, then launching its independent employment application.

The work platform launched more than 100 learning and training courses focused on generative AI that go “from basic concepts to advanced applications of this technology.”

With this, as indicated by the work network, it implemented two new tools that take advantage of the advanced models of OpenAI GPT so that, on the one hand, companies find facilities when describing the positions they offer and, on the other, that professionals can develop a more efficient profile.

LinkedIn has specified that this feature is aimed at subscribers of the premium or paid version, which “provides personalized writing suggestions” for its ‘About‘ sections and the professional headline of the profile, as it has commented in a statement.

It should be remembered that this is not the first functionality that LinkedIn introduces into its service using AI, since at the beginning of March it announced that it would use it to generate collaborative articles on specific topics, as well as start conversations between experts who use the platform.

The employment platform has commented that this initiative stems from the need to share knowledge to help other people start and reorganize their companies based on these experiences, instead of solving their doubts on the Internet.

LinkedIn believes that it is the users themselves who can help others who need advice to avoid making mistakes in the development of their businesses in different sectors and countries.

To solve this problem, it has announced collaborative articles, topics published by the company with opinions and perspectives added by the community of users of the professional platform.

To propose the topics, its editorial team has developed an AI that drives these conversations and, after a filter in which it uses its Competence Graph, matches each article with “relevant” experts who can contribute their vision and experience on the subject.

LinkedIn realizes that “starting a conversation is harder than joining it,” and for that reason, these collaborative articles “make it easy for professionals to come together and add and improve ideas.” Thanks to this feature, the company hopes that users can be easily connected with the topics of their interest and that they can take advantage of it on a personal and professional level.

In order to value these collaborations, it has established a system of certifications and badges, with which it seeks to reward those users who dedicate their time to the initiative. Some of these awards include Community Top Voice and Top Sales Voice. These will appear both in the collaborative article and in the ‘feed’ of the platform.

The ‘Focused’ button will be introduced in the inbox of the Messages section of the platform, for relevant messages of interest to users, while the rest will be saved in ‘Others’.

The company has not detailed when it will implement this feature, but it has clarified that it will be optional, so that it can be activated or deactivated according to the needs of the users.

In order to carry out this task, LinkedIn will use an automatic learning system that will classify these messages and automatically detect those that are ‘spam’ or unwanted, according to media such as TechCrunch.

The platform has commented that every second, a total of 21 direct messages (inMails) are sent with different job opportunities or vacancies. These may be mixed with other messages and, therefore, the inbox may overwhelm. For this reason, he believes that this new tool seeks to improve the experience on the platform, both for workers and recruiters.

This ‘online’ job search service has also confirmed that messages considered ‘spam’ will include a button to inform the platform of an inappropriate message.

Because users share personal data on these services, such as their name, email, what company they work for, or their profile pictures, cybercriminals have found these platforms to be the perfect target for their attacks.

These are aimed both at companies that seek to fill their available jobs, through techniques such as “deepfake”, and at the workers themselves, who end up being victims of phishing by presumably legitimate business accounts.

One of the most recent cases is that of the group of cybercriminals known as Lazarus, attributed to the main intelligence agency in North Korea, which uses this type of social network to generate initial contact with its victims.

Their modus operandi when it comes to collecting data is consistent with that carried out by other hacker groups with the aim of deceiving job seekers through job search platforms.

First of all, these cybercriminals carry out a study on the target profile to find out, among other factors, their interests, the environments in which they move, their contacts or the company they work for, among other details.

Next, the attackers carry out a tailor-made approach, that is, they personalize the first contact with their victims according to their interests in order to gain their trust.

Once they have succeeded, they take advantage of this contact with job applicants to send ‘malware’ or harmful code to their victims. These phishing attacks can include files or links intended to take over all or part of your devices.

Deployment of this malware and remote access tools (RATs) are two of the most common methods used by cybercriminals to spy on and monitor infected computers.

In this way, they can not only access, steal and share their victims’ data, but also have access to passwords and credentials for other services, such as bank accounts or digital wallets.

Social networks have become the main target of this type of scam, whose objective is to obtain information from users to access their personal accounts, as well as bank details.

These platforms are followed in a number of attacks by other sectors of the industry, such as retail, technology and freight transport.

This is one of the main conclusions reached by CheckPoint in its recent Brand Phishing Report, which analyzed the record of this type of attack carried out during the first quarter of this year.

In its report, CheckPoint analyzed phishing attacks targeting large companies and organizations such as LinkedIn, DHL, Google, Microsoft, Apple or WhatsApp.

During the first quarter of 2022, the professional social network completed 52 % of all registered attacks globally.

This figure is 44 % higher than the figure registered in the previous quarter, of 8 %. In addition, it is the first time that the platform has led the ranking of the most attacked websites.

The goal is for users to have greater control over what they want or not see” and thus improve their experience within the platform.

This new control feature makes it easy for users to inform the platform, by “just pressing the I don’t want to see this button, by clicking the 3 dots on any post”. The function also allows knowing the interest of the users for a specific author or topic.

Spokespersons for the social network explained that some publications invite the community to express their reactions to the content with the intention of increasing the reach on the platform, but sometimes the type of content “is misleading and frustrating.” The platform will not promote this type of content and encourages “all members of the community to focus on offering reliable, credible and authentic content.”

The new content control feature also allows users to report all posts that violate professional community policies. “The LinkedIn technical team may take action on accused profiles, such as being suspended or removed entirely.”

More news from LinkedIn

The new algorithm of the social network facilitates access to a greater amount of valuable content, interesting and can help users to develop and grow professionally. The platform bets on news and “opinions of public figures that are to the user’s liking, such as opinion leaders, experts in a sector, professors and content creators with relevant information applicable to daily work.”

Another cool feature that LinkedIn is adding, but it’s in testing for the US market, is the ability to decide if you want to remove political content from your feed. If the test is successful, the function will be available in all countries.

The information was published on the official blog of the company.

LinkedIn is quite a significant case because it was able to stay in that market since 2014, becoming the only social network that has remained in China for so long, thanks to the association with a capital firm with influence in that country and by complying with the Chinese laws on censorship of its users’ publications. However, it is now withdrawing in the face of “a significantly more challenging operating environment and greater demands from the Government.”

In the statement signed by Mohak Shroff, the company’s vice president of engineering, the challenges involved in creating a LinkedIn version in China are highlighted, which involved complying with the demands and restrictions that the government establishes to be able to operate the platforms on the Internet. But the company took on the challenge with the “objective of connecting the world’s professionals to make them more productive and successful”, establishing a series of fairly clear rules in case we had to “reassess our presence in the country.”

The company highlights that during the seven years of operation they managed to support users in their job search, but were not as successful in the social aspect: “We have been successful in helping Chinese members to find jobs and economic opportunities, but we have not achieved the same goals in the most social aspects of sharing and keeping them informed.”

Despite all that, the company does not completely abandon the Asian giant and will launch InJobs, a new application without social media functions and in which only job offers can be published. “Our new strategy is to focus on helping China-based professionals find jobs and Chinese companies find quality candidates.” This is how the statement describes it.

It is important to say that China represents one of the largest markets for this social network, with 54 million users, only behind the United States and India.

The professional social network LinkedIn will eliminate at the end of September the “Stories” or ephemeral content, and whose functions will reach the videos of the platform in the future.

LinkedIn had introduced Stories in the past year, with a short-lived video format similar to Instagram Stories intended for informal updates.

However, platform users prefer that the videos do not disappear but remain saved in their accounts, as the platform’s Product Director, Liz Li, recognized in her LinkedIn profile.

Likewise, LinkedIn users stated that they wanted more creative options to improve the results of their videos, in addition to the ‘stickers’ and the ‘question of the day‘ function that were present in the Stories.

For this reason, the platform has announced that it is working on developing an “even richer and more conversational reinvented video experience”, extending the creative tools of Stories to the entire platform and integrating them with your professional profile.

The new application was developed jointly with Azure, Microsoft’s communication services platform, the company to which the social network belongs. And it becomes part of the deployment that LinkedIn has been making in terms of new and more dynamic visual tools within its platform, such as stories or live broadcasts.

The incorporation of video calls is a great strength because it allows users to live a more comfortable and complete experience that provides complementary information within the video call, which will be present in the profile of the members, seen at the bottom of the video.

This attribute guarantees added value, particularly in the job search, by promoting a more dynamic environment for interviews or meetings in the future. The new tool will be deployed to all users of the social network throughout this week.

According to what was expressed by the representatives of the social network, with this new application it is guaranteed “from an initial job search to a 1: 1 conversation. We wanted to boost the productivity of our members from start to finish, while we kept safe. By adding video conferencing as part of the messaging experience, members can virtually connect while maintaining the context of their existing conversation.”

The initiative will have an initial phase of development that will be available for personal video calls, but they plan to expand it to incorporate several members to the meetings. They are also working on facilitating the connection, which is why when terms related to video calls appear in the conversation, a button will appear to speed up the process and start the conference.
