China restricts the use of the iPhone to its officials

The China Government issued an order for government members on the prohibition of Apple devices

China recently ordered its central government officials to stop using Apple’s iPhone and other foreign-brand mobile devices in their work, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Instructions to stop using these devices have been disseminated among officials in recent weeks, according to the sources consulted. This action is part of a context where Beijing has been restricting the use of the iPhone among certain senior officials for several years.

This decision could have a significant impact on Apple, as China accounts for approximately 20 % of its global revenue in 2022. China’s ban on foreign phone devices in government agencies mirrors similar measures implemented in the United States, such as the ban on TikTok on government-owned devices in New York City.

Growing technological tensions between Washington and Beijing, as well as China’s efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in the sector, add important context to this government decision.

The Chinese embassy in Washington DC has so far not responded to Business Insider’s request for comment, sent outside of regular business hours.
