Google will stop using SMS

The company announced that this will replace authentication through notifications on the mobile device

Google will change its default mechanism for two-step verification of users of their accounts during the registration process and, from July 7, will stop using SMS messages to use authentication through notifications on the mobile device.

Two-step verification is a security measure for accessing digital service accounts that, in addition to a password or keyword, adds one more step to ensure that the person accessing is the user. Google has been using this system since 2016, with SMS codes as the preferred mechanism.

Now, the US company indicated that starting on July 7, all users of the world’s largest search engine accounts will begin to receive on-screen notifications on their mobile devices instead of current SMS messages.

This measure will be taken for all Google account users with the exception of those who already use security keys to access their accounts with two-factor authentication.

Also, although notifications become the default method, users who prefer to continue performing two-factor verification through other systems such as SMS can choose it through Google account settings.
