Social economy enterprises gain ground in Latin America

According to a report by the Ibero-American General Secretariat and the Instituto de Empresa, social companies are gaining weight in Ibero-America with 170,000 companies of this type in seven countries in the region

“The companies with purpose and the boom of the Fourth Sector in Iberoamerica” analyses the cases of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Mexico, Portugal and Spain, which account for 87% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the region made up of 20 American and two European countries.

It is worth noting that the fourth sector groups social enterprises that not only seek economic benefit but also generate a social impact on the community.

These companies focus their activity on the fight against climate change, the social and labor insertion of people with disabilities or reducing the gender gap.

According to research carried out by the 170,000 registered social enterprises, the majority of which are traditional cooperatives, generate 10 million jobs and account for 6% of Ibero-American GDP.

The Ibero-American Secretary General, Rebeca Grynspan, said: “We want to promote a more inclusive and sustainable economy within the framework of the Sustainable Development Objectives (ODS). At the same time, the region is working to create a favourable regulatory framework for these companies.
