NPA revealed increase in suspicious transactions of cryptocurrencies

The Japanese agency said that during 2018 received up to eight times more cases than were detected in 2017

The National Police Agency of Japan (NPA) said that this year 2018 there was an increase in suspicious transactions of cryptocurrency exchanges.

As detailed by the NPA, during this year the police received five thousand 944 reports between the months of January and December. These figures represent eight times more than the number of cases that occurred in 2017, which reached 669.

“It has been some time since the reporting system began, and has been adopted by the industry through the guidance of the Financial Services Agency“, said an official of the Japanese agency.

The suspicious activities mentioned in the report include the use of the same photo by several users; several commercial accounts opened from the same IP address, and record of telephone numbers out of service. The NPA claims that these accounts could be associated with money laundering, illegal drug trade and child pornography.

Since 2017, Japan has been working with a legal obligation to report suspicious transactions, an action that responded to the need to apply countermeasures to prevent cryptocurrencies from being used illegally.
