Johnson & Johnson to pay a fine of $ 117 million

The pharmaceutical compány would be marketing a mesh implanted in the vagina to allegedly support the pelvic organs

Johnson & Johnson agreed with the prosecutors of 41 entities in the United States to cancel a fine valued at $ 117 million, after the pharmaceutical company commercialized a surgically mesh implanted in the vagina that was supposedly approved by the Food and Drug Administration and which would aim to support the pelvic organs of women suffering from the bladder.

According to New York State Attorney General Letitia James, the fine other than being paid by Johnson & Johnson will be subsidized by Ethicon, according to the prosecutor’s motive was “endangering women’s health throughout the state of New York. York and the rest of the nation… Johnson & Johnson and their subsidiaries should have informed all women who used this device about possible complications, but chose earnings rather than security.”

During the investigations of the prosecutors of the case, the companies misrepresented or did not adequately disclose the possible side effects of the products, among which they highlighted “the risk of chronic pain and inflammation, erosion of the mesh through the vagina, incontinence which develops after surgery, painful sexual intercourse and vaginal scars.”

The statement said that the companies were aware of the serious medical complications to which patients could be subjected and despite this “did not issue sufficient warnings to consumers or surgeons who implanted the devices.”

In addition, Johnson & Johnson is required to fully disclose the risks of the device and remove deceptive advertising from the product, as the mesh was approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
