Unemployment in Colombia continues to increase
The indicator grew more than 10% during the month of June to reach a level of 19.8%
The unemployment rate in Colombia registered an increase of more than ten percentage points in the month of June with respect to the same month of the previous year, after reaching a level of 19.8%, but it moderated with the data collected in May, when unemployment was 21.4%, according to the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE).
These data represent a reduction of 4.27 million people employed in the month of June, with a total of 18.3 million workers, compared to 22.6 million the previous year, in the context of the crisis resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.
“This reduction in the employed population in June is 18.7%. This is positive because for May we reported that there was a reduction of 22.1% and April registered a reduction of 25.4%, which means a decrease for this month, “explained the director of DANE, Juan Daniel Oviedo.
The data reveals that the situation of urban unemployment, which includes the 13 cities and metropolitan areas of Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla, Bucaramanga, Manizales, Pereira, Cúcuta, Pasto, Ibagué, Montería, Cartagena and Villavicencio, registered a greater increase, reaching a rate of 24.9%, compared to 10.7% the previous year.
The main activities affected are the arts, recreation, entertainment, trade and repair of vehicles, public administration, defense and education. The reduction in employment has mainly affected women, with a gap of almost 10% compared to men, which is accentuated in the population aged 25 to 54 years.
