Samsung and 8K Association to sign strategic alliance

Both companies will form alliances to create the first global 8K TV certification program

Samsung announced on Wednesday the agreement with the 8K Association (8KA) to create the first global 8K TV certification program in order to achieve a set of criteria to certify that a television has high image quality resolution capability.

The 8KA Certification Program aims to differentiate televisions that have four times more pixels than 4K TVs, with greater sharpness, contrast, color and higher dynamic range performance (HDR).

In order to be certified, the TV will have to have a resolution of 7680 x 4320, brightness greater than 600 nits, HDMI 2.1 and an efficiency video encoding (HVEC). The Samsung QLED 8K TV will be the first TV certified by this agreement.

“Our goal is to provide users with the ability to identify, in a simple and transparent way, 8K TVs during their shopping experience,” said Hyogun Lee, executive vice president of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics.

This association also seeks to expand its reach through educational programs to promote participation, innovation and content development within 8K. Companies that belong to the association, such as Samsung, will be able to promote their products as 8K once they have been certified by 8KA.
