EU response on Brexit will depend on the British Parliament

The president of the European Council, Donald Tusk, said the decision to postpone Brexit will have to do with what the parliamentary sector decides

The president of the European Council, Donald Tusk, warned London on Tuesday that the response of the European Union to the request to postpone the exit of the United Kingdom will depend on what the British Parliament “what ever it decides” on the agreement negotiated for Brexit, while asking to study such a request “with all seriousness”.

“The situation is quite complex after the events of the weekend in the United Kingdom and the British request to extend the process. I am consulting with the leaders on how to react and I will decide in the next few days,” Tusk told the plenary session of the European Parliament, in a debate of the last European summit.

The president of the European Council began consultations on Sunday after receiving the request of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, but the Twenty-seven continue to follow the steps for the ratification of the pact, focused on its entry into force in time if The House of Commons approves the text this week and Brexit is produced as planned on October 31.

In any case, as the president of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, said on Monday and Tusk confirmed in Strasbourg (France), the European Parliament will not hold the vote for the ratification of the Withdrawal Treaty until Westminster approves it first. “I would postpone this last step at least until next week”.

“We must be prepared for any scenario but one thing must be clear: as I told Prime Minister Johnson last Saturday, a Brexit without agreement will never be our decision”, he said.
