Merkel supports including the Amazon issue in the G7

The German chancellor said she agrees with the initiative of the French president to discuss what happened during this week in Latin America

German Chancellor Angela Merkel agrees with the decision of French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss the fires unleashed in the Brazilian Amazon at the next meeting of the group of the seven most industrialized countries in the world (G7).

“The chancellor is convinced that the plight of the Amazon rainforest should be on the agenda. The French president has the chancellor at his side,” said Steffen Seibert, spokesman for the German government.

The G7 summit, to which Germany, France, Italy, Great Britain, Canada, the United States and Japan belong, begins this Saturday in Biarritz, a seaside resort in the southwest of France.

“The extent of the fires in the Amazon region is frightening and disturbing. Not only for Brazil and the other affected countries, but for the whole world,” said Seibert, who also highlighted the exceptional importance that the Amazon has for climate and world biodiversity.
