Google, Intel and Microsoft have joined, together with other technology companies, to form the Confidential Computing Consortium, a community that aims to protect the confidentiality of data in use in computing.
According to a statement issued by the Linux Foundation, the project has been created with the objective of “defining and accelerating the adoption of confidential computing”, that is, the protection of the confidentiality and integrity of data and code while they are processed in a public cloud.
The agency’s chief executive, Jim Zemlin, said this consortium “will help define and build open technologies to support trust in this infrastructure for data in use.”
On their homepage they state that the measures that are currently being carried out with regard to data protection focus on ‘static data’, that is, storage, and ‘data in transit’, which are those that occur when browsing the Web.
However, from this consortium they put the focus on the data in use, because they claim that “encrypting the data in use is probably the most challenging step in providing a complete encrypted life cycle for sensitive data.” Thus, the organization will ensure that the encrypted data “is processed in memory without exposing it to the rest of the system”.
