Electoral processes are supported by new technology

Elections consist of a procedure to choose representatives which exist from the first times of civilization. Currently, 90% of countries include technology in these processes

Nowadays, most countries carry out secret, direct and universal elections. But in ancient times in Greece, for example, only free men were allowed to vote and did it by raising their hands, so the process was evidently not secret.

Now, more than 2 thousand years later, the elections transformed into sophisticated procedures for electoral cycles based on the latest technology.

More than 80 countries will organize elections during 2019 and in most of them at least one phase of the process will be done automatically. According to a study conducted by the IDEA in 2017, more than 160 nations use technology at least in some of its phases.

Of the nations surveyed, 57% use technology in electronic tabulation systems for results, 71% use it in voter registration, 21% use voter identification and the remaining 15% implement it in the count of votes.

It is to be expected that elections will be increasingly automated and with greater use of technology, which will imply greater security in the elections and greater participation by the electorate.
