The Republic of North Macedonia is the new name of the ex Yugoslave nation

The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) is now called the Republic of Macedonia of the North or simply Macedonia of the North

The Greek parliament ratified by absolute majority the so-called Prespa Agreement signed in June of last year between the Governments of Skopje and Athens and thus closed a dispute that lasted more than a quarter of a century.

Despite all the political controversy, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras now rules in a minority, which is equivalent to 153 deputies who supported the change of name. For its part, the independent Greeks, caused the fracture of the political center, which only a year ago had formed an alliance of parties. The conservatives, communists, social democrats, centrists and right-wingers have not supported the agreement.

In recent months, Tsipras tried to convince everyone that the new term of Northern Macedonia, which must be used all over the world, is a conquest for Greece, since more than 130 countries had recognized the former Yugoslav republic by name constitutional, Republic of Macedonia. Now we have to add the geographical complement “North”.

Also, in Northern Macedonia, the agreement also met with strong resistance, despite the fact that it opens the country’s doors to NATO membership and accession negotiations with the European Union. Many citizens do not accept to abandon what until now was the constitutional name.
