NASA successfully landed InSight spacecraft on Mars

The NASA probe is officially on Mars, although there is a difference with respect to other missions

The InSight spacecraft landed on Mars, arousing worldwide attention after sending the first images. Although NASA was already present in the Martian soil, this mission presents a peculiarity.

InSight is the first spacecraft destined to study the interior of the red planet. The arrival successfully leads to a mission that will last two years and that will help scientists understand the rock formation of Mars but also of other planets.

Behind all this is Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) from the NASA, which is in charge of InSight for the Directorate of Scientific Missions of NASA. In fact, InSight is part of NASA’s Discovery Program which main objective is to improve our understanding of the solar system by exploring planets, their moons and small bodies such as comets and asteroids.

The machines were built by Lockheed Martin Space, including the cruise platform and the landing module, which is based on the design of the Mars Phoenix module. Likewise, the machine that is on the planet has a robotic arm more than 1.8 meters long.

The arm raises a seismometer and a heat flow probe. Likewise, a camera in the arm aims to provide 3D and color views of the landing site, the location of the instrument and several activities. In addition, it has sensors that measure climate changes and the magnetic field.
