Swiss railway uses blockchain to improve job security

The Swiss railways company Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has completed a test for a blockchain based identities management system for workers

The project was completed in November and aims to improve the current manual, paper-based processes in an agile work environment with a digital, audit-proof solution, all based on accounting technology.

The solution was developed by the blockchain startup Linum Labs, using uPort’s open source technology, a project that began at the Ethereum design studio based in New York, ConsenSys.

In the test the workers created their digital identities in the uPort application on their mobile devices and SBB issued certificates confirming that they received the appropriate training.

Subsequently, employees used these digital identifications when signing in and out at the construction sites where they worked. To enter the workplace, a worker scans a QR code from the application on his cell phone.

In the case of railways, block technology is only used for the administration of additional keys, such as key rotation, revocation and delegation to third parties.
