United States accuses Russian agents for crimes with cryptocurrencies

The Department of Justice of the United States maintains that the presumed parties made payments with Bitcoin to acquire equipment and circumvent security controls imposed by financial institutions

The Department of Justice of the United States filed accusations against seven alleged Russian intelligence agents, for having used cryptocurrencies as part of a set of actions aimed at issuing erroneous data to influence individuals.

The citizens Aleksei Sergeyevich Morenets, Evgenii Mikhaylovich Serebriakov, Ivan Sergeyevich Yermakov, Artem Andreveyich Malyshev, Dmitriy Sergeyevich Badin, Oleg Mikhaylovich Sotnikov Sotnikov and Alexey Valerevich Minin are presumably part of a Russian intelligence agency associated with the use of chemical weapons and other criminal practices .

According to the Department of Justice, those involved wanted to cover the trail of payments made using Bitcoin balances, this being the only digital currency to which reference was made in the investigations.

The accusation filed in writing alleges that the parties involved used various legal tender currencies, such as US dollars, but Bitcoin was the payment mechanism for the purchase of servers, registration of domains and purchase of other computer equipment. Most of the transfers made with the digital currency were made to companies based in the US.

Deputy Attorney General of the Department of Justice’s National Security Division, John Demers, said during a press conference that three of the defendants appeared to be meddling with Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election, and had also made payments with cryptocurrency to finance dubious efforts to influence said electoral process.
