Unesco asks a debate on the use and application of AI

The director general Audrey Azoulay asked to study the ethical consequences of the indiscriminate use of AI

Currently, artificial intelligence is not only applied to medicine, military security or astronomy, but also to the banking and services sector. Its indiscriminate use could have incalculable ethical consequences, according to the Director General of Unesco, Audrey Azoulay, who on Wednesday, July 18, called on the nations to debate the issue.

Science works to get a machine to reach intelligence that is most similar to human intelligence. The great dilemma is to reach innovations that integrate common sense. Hence the concern of the Director General of Unesco, since it is not about a  program of video games, but devices that could be harmful to humanity.

Undoubtedly, the ambition of scientists faces ethical, cultural, and even religious questions. Some experts point out that there is still a need to develop algorithms that allow androids and programs based on artificial intelligence to reach true reasoning.

Advances in AI continue and we currently have androids that perform multiple tasks previously entrusted to humans. But the need remains for reliable, responsible developments with limited autonomy and that, above all, respect the role of the human being as manager of the orders received by the machines.

The dangers of improper handling of this technology may include unwanted and harmful behavior. In this regard, scientists, academics and legislators analyze in several forums every year the ways to achieve collaborative artificial intelligence, based on solid computer programs and protected against hacking.
