Solar energy in agriculture is safer and more reliable

UN promotes initiatives for the use of solar panels in irrigation systems in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America

The United Nations Organization, in joint action with various NGOs and the World Bank, promotes the use of sustainable and less polluting development mechanisms in the different areas of the world economy and production.

One example is the support that has been given through the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on the use of solar panels to boost irrigation systems. This is intended to promote the rational use of water, a greater scope and efficiency of irrigation systems, reduction in the use of pesticides and machinery that produce polluting gases.

By improving irrigation systems, an increase in agricultural productivity can be noticed, which results in gains for the actors and a higher quality of lifeUN promotes in countries with more sensitive areas the implementation of incentive programs and ecological subsidies to farmers.

Regarding the rational use of waterFAO indicates that the ideal is to carry out a preliminary study on the demand, its quality, availability of aqueducts and other systems of distribution to the population. Also, the implementation of advanced electronic systems to monitor the distribution and any failures that may occur.

UN initiatives on solar tools for irrigation in agriculture have been tested in various countries of America and sub-Saharan Africa.
