OpenAI no longer has AI detection

ChatGPT creator quietly withdrew its AI detection software

The renowned artificial intelligence company, OpenAI, quietly withdrew its AI detection software due to its low accuracy. The AI classifier was launched on January 31 with the purpose of helping users such as teachers and professors to differentiate between text written by humans and text generated by AI.

However, according to an announcement that accompanied the release of the tool, the tool was no longer available as of July 20 due to its low accuracy rate. The link to the tool is no longer active, and the explanation offered by the company was simple: they were looking for better methods to identify content generated by AI.

“We are working to incorporate feedback and are currently investigating more efficient provenance techniques for text, and have committed to developing and deploying mechanisms that allow users to understand whether audio or visual content is AI-generated”, the company stated.

From the beginning, OpenAI warned that the detection tool had its limitations and could not be considered “fully reliable”. Among them, it was highlighted that it was “very inaccurate” when verifying texts with less than 1,000 characters and that it could erroneously label texts written by humans as generated by AI.

This classifier is just the latest of the OpenAI products that has come under fire. On July 18, researchers from Stanford and UC Berkeley published a study that revealed a significant decline in the performance of OpenAI’s flagship product, ChatGPT, over time.

According to the study, ChatGPT-4’s ability to accurately identify prime numbers dropped drastically from 97.6 % to just 2.4 % in recent months. Additionally, both ChatGPT-3.5 and ChatGPT-4 experienced a significant reduction in their ability to generate new lines of code. These situations led OpenAI to review and improve its products to offer more reliable solutions in the future.
