More than 250,000 customers want to close agreement with Volkswagen

Customers will have until April 20 to decide on this agreement or a separate lawsuit

About 95 percent of Volkswagen customers affected by the emissions manipulation scandal are interested in a swift deal with the company, a week before the claim deadline, Volkswagen reported in the German city of Wolfsburg.

According to the automaker, between 250,000 and 262,000 customers signed up to join the closed agreement between Volkswagen and the Federation of Central German Consumers. More than 130,000 agreements have already been reviewed and are ready.

Affected customers will have until April 20 to decide on this settlement or a separate lawsuit. The money will be transferred from May 5. The idea is that within 12 weeks everyone has collected their money, in accordance with what is established with Volkswagen.

Depending on the model and age of the Diesel car, Volkswagen is willing to pay between 1,350 and 6,257 euros (1,472 and 6,825 dollars). The possible final sum in compensation is estimated at around 830 million euros.

In September 2015, Volkswagen acknowledged after evaluations by the authorities and studies by researchers in the United States, that it had manipulated the emission values of its Diesel cars. The software of certain engines were programmed in such a way that in the tests they marked lower emissions than those generated once they circulated on the street.
