Investment in Latin America exceeded $ 200 million in 2022

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Cepal) gave details in its report regarding investment last year

Foreign direct investment (FDI) in Latin America and the Caribbean reached the figure of 224,579 million dollars in 2022, which represents a growth of 55.2 % compared to the previous year and the highest record in the historical series.

As explained by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Cepal) in a recent report, the result is largely explained by the performance offered by various economies in the region, especially Brazil.

Likewise, growth in investment was also observed in areas such as the service sector. The growth of this investment has, in turn, caused its weight in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the region to grow to 4% of the total.

Of course, the United Nations economic body also points out that the dynamics of last year is “congruent” with the post-pandemic recovery, so it is “not clear” that these records will remain at similar levels in 2023.

The executive secretary of ECLAC, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, highlighted the data for 2022 during the presentation of the report, but has stressed the importance of ensuring that the “challenge” is not only to attract and retain this foreign investment, but to maximize the contribution of this to the development of countries.

“For this, countries must pay attention to post-establishment productive development policies,” explained the senior United Nations official, in detail that these policies refer, among other points, to the promotion of value chains, the development of human resources, infrastructure and logistics, and building local capacities.
