Holland deepens fight against money laundering

Among the measures that the country intends to apply in its fight against crimes such as money laundering is the regulation of cryptocurrencies

Dutch Finance Minister Wopke Hoekstra, together with Justice and Security Minister Ferdinand Grapperhaus, are fighting to reduce the risks currently associated with cryptographic currencies in the country as a crucial measure against crimes such as money laundering.

The letter issued by the officials reads: “Criminals who use the financial system to disguise their proceeds of crime seriously compromise the integrity and security of the financial system.” Money laundering is a huge and complex problem and, therefore, It is very important that you fight jointly and effectively.”

In keeping with this statement, both ministers detailed a three-pronged approach to money laundering, which in their view should start with the regulation of crypto wallets providers in cryptocurrencies and exchanges.

Officials emphasize the need to tighten the regulations that apply to digital currency services and the Initial Currency Offers (ICO) “in an attempt to adhere to the standards of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).” They do not neglect the need to invest in projects aimed at countering criminal funds.

Another measure of the Dutch ministers focuses on the prohibition of cash payments exceeding 3,000 euros. Similarly, they requested that the 500 euro bill be withdrawn from circulation.
