Genius accuses Google of copying song lyrics during searches

The company specialized in song lyrics ensures that Google copied its lyrics to favor search results and harm traffic to their website

Genius Media hid a message in Morse code in its lyrics to demonstrate the plagiarism allegedly committed by Google by copying word by word the lyrics of the songs and publishing them in search results.

Undoubtedly, Genius used a very creative method to determine if Google was copying its lyrics. It applied curved and straight apostrophes to the letters on the website to create a kind of watermark. Subsequently, with the conversion of these patterns into Morse code, the words that were copied were known.

Before the controversy, the search engine said: “We take the quality of the data and the rights of the creators very seriously and hold our license partners accountable to the terms of our agreement.”

It should be emphasized that Genius was founded in 2009 and is known as a platform for smart rap lyrics. In recent years the firm has included other musical styles. Also, it offers fans a space to comment and discuss their favorite songs.

For his part, Ben Gross, Chief Strategist of Genius said that the company published irrefutable evidence that Google shows in OneBox the letters that were previously copied from Genius. Meanwhile, Google stated that in its search results it is expressly stated that the letters are licensed from various sources.
