General Motors strike reaches its fourth week

With more than 50,000 workers on strike, the company and its conglomerate accumulate numerous losses

The United Auto Workers (UAW) and General Motors (GM) union resumed negotiations for the signing of a new collective agreement after Friday 11 the union submitted a counter proposal to the offer made by the car company. Likewise, the company announced that it will increase the weekly payments to workers on strike from 250 to 275 dollars, which have also been affected by the lack of the salary payment for 28 days.

In a statement, the president of the union, Gary Jones, announced that “UAW affiliates and their families are sacrificing themselves” as well as informing that “this decision reflects the UAW’s commitment and solidarity with all our affiliates and their families who have taken the brave decision to protect the way of life of our middle class.”

Half truths

After GM’s last offer to UAW, it offered to invest $ 9 billion in the United States in the next few years, $ 2 billion more than it had initially announced, salary improvements and measures for temporary employees to become permanent workers.

However, the union describes its proposals as “half-truths”, criticizing the blockade of the negotiations “to exhaust UAW-GM workers in pickets and protect millions of dollars in corporate bonuses.”

According to the calculations made by J.P. Morgan points out that GM is losing more than $ 500 million for each week that its workers are on strike, a situation that not only affects the US plant but also facilities in Mexico and Canada, which have had to lower production due to lack of pieces.
