Chinese researchers create an artificial sun

Chinese scientists managed to create an impressive artificial sun, which is able to overcome temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius

A few weeks ago, China reported its interest in launching an artificial moon into space in 2020. However, the plans were not only in this lighting satellite, but now they created an apparatus known as Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST).

The EAST is a device used to obtain nuclear fusion energy and was developed to imitate the way in which the sun generates heat and light. For that reason it was nicknamed as an artificial sun.

The Chinese artificial sun has reached more than 100 million degrees of temperature in its experimental status of four months during this year.

It is the first fully superconducting tokamak with a non-circular cross section in the world. It was carried out by China with the purpose of addressing fundamental scientific issues for the application of fusion energy.

The objective of the device, which reaches a temperature even greater than that of the sun’s core, is to study nuclear fusion in order to use it some day as an alternative energy source. The energy obtained from nuclear fusion could be clean, unlike fission nuclear energy, which leaves toxic residues.
