European Union opens investigation against social network of Elon Musk

European Union investigates Elon Musk's social network X for violating content moderation and transparency rules

The European Union announced the first official investigation into social network X for violating the Digital Services Act by allegedly allowing the posting of illegal or non-transparent content.

According to the announcement in Brussels, the network owned by Elon Musk allegedly breached the rules on “content moderation and transparency, following posts related to the Hamas attack on Israel.”

European Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton, responsible for digital affairs, said: “The opening of a formal investigation against X shows that the days when big online platforms behaved as if they were too big to care about the rules are over.”

With this ruling, Breton made clear in the statement that an in-depth investigation will be carried out to determine whether the social network X violated the “obligations of the DSA with regard to the fight against the dissemination and amplification of illegal content and disinformation in the EU”.

On non-compliance with DSA rules, the law provides for fines of up to 6 % of the defendant’s total worldwide turnover. And if the company in question is found guilty, it may face a ban on operating in the EU.

The social network X is not the only one under the magnifying glass of the European Commission, as TikTok, Facebook and YouTube are also under investigation.
