Digital crimes are a threat to virtually every productive sector worldwide. Just as they empty people’s bank accounts, steal personal data, and impersonate others, hackers are finding new ways to affect sectors such as industry, healthcare, manufacturing, education, telecommunications, and supply chains, among others.

Internet criminals are using increasingly sophisticated methods, including the use of AI that allows for virtually imperceptible impersonation, to breach the protective barriers of individuals and businesses, as well as universities, oil facilities, healthcare centers, manufacturers, and more.

Among the most common attack methods is the introduction of malware into both personal and corporate computers to steal information. But cybercriminals also commit crimes through phishing, asset theft, card cloning at points of sale, malicious applications, and cyberespionage.

Losses from cyberattacks are in the millions. Beyond companies seeing their data exposed or simply losing it to hackers, there’s also the theft of assets, money in bank accounts that ends up in the hands of cybercriminals, data ransom demands, and operational disruption.

Solving all of this comes at a cost. In this sense, some projections of losses from cyberattacks this year point to more than $10.5 trillion.

In a televised event, Maduro declared: “Today we are going to deliver the corresponding amount in dollars, to 7,657,093 dollars, doing a lot with what we have and generating resources, generating more and more resources based on the research applied to the technology, health, education.”

He highlighted that 821 women participate in the 210 projects that will be financed. He explained that of the total number of projects, 70 in the research area are related to the agri-food sector, “41 to the pharmaceutical sector, 29 to the field of social sciences, 15 to the dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge, 14 to hydrocarbons, 14 to the environment, 6 to the industry, 10 to the scientific hotbed and 1 to education.”

Maduro insisted on the need to disseminate these initiatives so that the population is aware of what is being done: “We must make a communication effort through the networks, the media, by institution, by university, so that the example of All these research projects, applied technology, infect generations of young people who are being trained throughout the country with a thirst for knowledge.”

The president also referred to the importance of activating the mechanisms for assigning training scholarships in postgraduate and higher preparation programs to all scientists in the country, both in national universities and for institutions abroad.

In this regard, he mentioned integration with the BRICS group, as an alternative so that Venezuelan researchers “can study in universities outside the country so that they can assume cooperation in knowledge and articulation with the world that has already been born.”

Given the technological advances that allow instant communication, the UK communications regulator (Ofcom) is analyzing “changes to the rules that will mean that telecommunications providers will no longer be obliged to provide fax services under the universal obligation service (USO).”

Currently, the phone companies BT and KCOM offer support for faxing by using a phone line through the USO, or Law of Universal Use. This constitutes a set of rules that allows the availability of the telephone connection in the United Kingdom at a moderate cost.

However, due to the technological changes that have led telephone companies to migrate to the Internet protocol or IP, they could be the key point for the elimination of the law that still keeps the use of fax alive, since both systems are not compatible.

Opinions on this issue will be heard until December in order to make the final decision in early 2023.
