Coronavirus causes notable losses in Chinatown

A 60% of losses are accounted for in Chinese New York stores for fear of contracting Wuhan virus

The deadly Wuhan virus continues to provoke not only countless human losses but creating chaos in sales volume in stores in the Chinatown neighborhood of New York, as well as other areas of Chinese communities such as Flushing or Sunset Park.

The situation has been affecting these businesses for weeks, which was not expected for the date because the celebration of the lunar new year usually left very high sales, but the effects of the coronavirus COVID-19 has determined the figures thereof until sales volume fall from 40 to 60%.

Despite the fact that no cases have been registered in the Big Apple yet, sales in Chinese stores are almost 0. In this sense, the mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, extended a call to citizens to visit Chinese shops and support the Asian community.

On the other hand, the head of Health Department of New York City, Oxiris Barbot, said that “currently the risk of contracting coronavirus remains low and the level of preparation of the city is high. There are no reasons to avoid public places like the subway and even less our famous Chinese restaurants and small shops.”

Understanding that Chinese commerce is part of the strengthening of the economy in the city, New York small town councilor Gregg Bishop said the intention is to “make sure New Yorkers come and support small businesses because they are part of the backbone of the city’s economy.”
