Consumers prefer payments with debit card

Payments in supermarkets, bank transactions or purchase of airline tickets are some of the most frequent uses of plastic money

The appearance of credit and debit cards as payment systems decades ago has generated trends in consumers that are currently maintained, despite the revolution that cryptocurrencies have caused in the global financial system.

Currently, most consumers use the so-called plastic money to make payments, purchases and online transactions. According to estimations of UK Finance in the United Kingdom, in 2017 there was an increase of 14% in the number of debit card users, to account for 13, 2 billion payments.

The preference of the debit card over cash is based on aspects such as saving time and money as a result of not having to go to a physical bank agency, speed of operations, the use of zero contact technology or that does not require a key.

UK Finance had predicted a considerable increase of debit card payment over cash payments for 2018. However, reality seems to have exceeded its estimates faster than the industry expected.

It is important to note that despite this trend, payments in local currency -and in cash– are still maintained in many countries, due to the slow progress in the development of new technologies and advanced devices for payments and commercial operations.
