PayPal data was stolen

The security company ESET made an analysis of the incident that occurred on January 18, directly related to PayPal

Security company ESET analyzed an incident in which information of almost 35,000 PayPal users was exposed on January 18th.

According to an official statement, between December 6th and 8th, 2022, unauthorized third parties accessed the customers’ accounts using the user login credentials. PayPal stated that there is no evidence that the credentials have been stolen from their internal system, so the login information may have been obtained through past security breaches or some type of brute force cyberattack.

Despite the incident, PayPal assures that there is no evidence that the users’ data has been misused. However, the cybercriminals were able to access data such as name, address, tax identification number, and date of birth. Additionally, access to PayPal accounts also allows for obtaining the transaction history and some linked card data.

Therefore, ESET recommends enabling two-factor authentication to improve account security.
