European Commission proposes new law for digital markets

The measure aims to force large internet platforms to sell their companies in order to avoid abuses

This Tuesday the European Commission presented a new law for digital markets, it will force large Internet platforms to sell their companies in order to avoid abuses of power in the market.

The measure contemplates that if it fails to comply with said legal norm, the company will have to assume penalties of up to 10 % of its annual income on a global scale in order to combat dominance.

According to the information offered by community sources “if it is the only adequate way to solve the problem, (…) structural separation or divestment may be a last resort measure.”

Brussels also presented a law on digital services which establishes fines of up to 6 % of their global annual income if they do not remove illegal content from their web pages, even if it comes from third parties.

The main objective of these measures is to reduce the power of technology companies, limiting the use of their commercial customers’ data, which is used to improve their competition in the market, as well as preventing those companies from forcing their users to install applications. or specific services.
