Phishing campaigns increases during Christmas purchases

The increase in Internet transactions due to Black Friday and the Christmas season, generated a wave of identity theft attempts through email

Cybercriminals took advantage of the increase in online purchases coinciding with the proximity of Christmas and Black Friday to carry out a phishing campaign in which they impersonated the identity of mails to carry out fraud that includes the theft of bank cards.

Between November 25 and 28, Kaspersky systems detected the sending of more than 930 messages of this type of cyber scam, as reported by the cybersecurity company in a statement.

Fraudulent messages are usually titled “Your delivery is on the way” and contain a link for the user to click and download malware to their device.

To do this, cybercriminals use the argument that the delivery could not be made, leaving the payment of shipping costs pending. The sender’s address, although it indicates Customer Service, does not coincide at all with the official postal address.

If the unsuspecting users decide to click on the successive links, they will find screens very similar to the original ones. In the first one, the payment of about 2 dollars is requested on a fake website that requests bank details. The following simulates the validation of the data provided with the “mails” logo.

“Cybercriminals are taking advantage of the growth of online purchases made during these days on the occasion of Black Friday and Cyber Monday to collect personal and banking information from the most naive shoppers,” advanced Dani Creus, Senior Security Analyst of the Research and Analysis team (GReAT) from Kaspersky.

The cybersecurity company recommended the users to be highly cautious in Christmas shopping, a period in which phishing traditionally increases.
