Australia warns of fraud in bitcoins in payment of taxes

The Australian authorities warn citizens that they must be alert about possible cases of scams in bitcoins during the tax process

Given the proximity of the tax collection process in Australia, tax authorities warn citizens of false collectors who claim to be officials of the Australian Tax Office (ATO) to incur scams with bitcoins.

According to information related to the case, since July, citizens “have lost almost 1 million Australian dollars (more than USD $ 700,000) as victims of fraudsters posing as tax officials, according to the ATO.”

A fundamental fact in this context is that an average of 28,000 fraud attempts have occurred and the protagonist as a means of payment is, surprisingly, bitcoin. In the past, scams were made through Visa or iTunes cards. The modality migrated to the ATMs of the main cryptocurrency worldwide.

The deadline for the payment of taxes in Australia is November 21st, which is why the national tax office has issued a warning to citizens to be alert to unusual requests. In this regard, Kath Anderson, assistant commissioner of the ATO, said: “Our advice is simple: the ATO will never ask citizens to make a payment at an ATM or through gift or prepaid cards, such as iTunes and Visa cards, or the direct credit that will be paid to a personal bank account.”

Until now, victims of fraud in the tax framework include vulnerable segments of the population, such as immigrants who are unaware of Australian legislation and fearing imprisonment assume as true the demands of the alleged tax collectors.

It is crucial to note that the only ways to pay the tax in Australia are direct debit, bank transfers, credit or debit card payments and the BPAY electronic invoice payment platform.
