US court issued arrest warrant for Trump

The state of Georgia filed an indictment against the former US president, related to the attempted sabotage of the 2020 elections

The Georgia state court filed indictments late Monday against former US President Donald Trump, who is currently campaigning to return to the White House, and 18 other people from his close circle.

The charges are related to the alleged attempt to tamper with the result of the 2020 election in Georgia. These accusations mark the fourth legal case against the former president, who is emerging as the favorite for the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential elections.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has released these charges, arguing against the 19 defendants based on Georgia’s “organized gang crime” law, a rule typically applied to gang-related cases. . This accusation carries possible penalties of 5 to 20 years in prison. At the center of these accusations is Trump, who faces 13 charges in the framework of this investigation.

At a press conference in Atlanta, the state capital, the prosecutor defended the evidence presented and pointed out that both Trump and the other defendants have until August 25 to appear before the Georgia Court.

Willis has expressed his desire to try all 19 defendants, including figures such as former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows and his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, in a single trial within six months. However, she has remembered that she is the judge who will determine the trial date.

The prosecutor has stressed that in Georgia, as in all states, there is the possibility of challenging the results of an election in state courts for those who believe that they are incorrect. She has asserted that the indictment states that instead of following the legal process of contesting elections in Georgia, the defendants engaged in an organized crime enterprise with the goal of overturning the result of the 2020 Georgia presidential election.

In response to these accusations, Donald Trump has used his platform on the TruthSocial network – which is under his control after being suspended from Twitter – to describe the situation as “rigged” and a “witch hunt”. Trump questions why he was not indicted two and a half years ago and claims that this indictment is being used at the height of his political campaign.
