UK government works on new competition regime for tech giants

The government announced the creation of an agency, which comes to apply measures to companies such as Google and Facebook, among others

The UK government announced the creation of an agency to regulate large technology companies, such as Google and Facebook, which will be designed to offer users more control over their data.

The new agency, which will be called the Digital Markets Unit (DMU) and will begin operations in April 2021, will be part of the country’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). It will work in collaboration with the United Kingdom Office of Communications ( Ofcom) and the Office of the Information Commissioner.

The DMU will apply a new code that regulates the behavior of the platforms that currently dominate the market to “ensure that consumers and small businesses are not at a disadvantage.”

Under the new code, the government could require companies, including those financed by digital advertising, to be more transparent about the services they provide, as well as how they use consumer data, offer consumers the option of receiving advertising. personalized and prevent them from imposing restrictions on customers.

“Online platforms offer huge benefits to businesses and society. But there is a growing consensus in the UK and abroad that the concentration of power among a small number of tech companies is holding back growth in the tech sector, reducing innovation and potentially having negative impacts on the people and companies that depend on them,” the statement said.
