First autonomous vehicle causes sensation in Chile

It is a small red bus without driver that picks up a maximum of 12 passengers in a central area of Santiago

The first vehicle without steering wheel in Latin America is the new attraction for Chilean citizens visiting the O’Higgins Park in Santiago. It is a 100% electric red bus that runs approximately one kilometer away, from the starting point to the Olympic pool that is located within the central park facilities.

With a maximum capacity for 12 passengers, the vehicle offers children, adults and seniors a delightful experience. It is also an example of future transportation systems, as stated by the creative company Transdev Chile.

“At the moment, this prototype has few problems to face in its route. A pigeon that crosses flying in front of the bus, some particle of dust larger than usual or a runner who passes too close to the vehicle are alert enough to automatically stop,” said the company.

For his part, the company’s chief of strategy, Lluís Vidal, reported: “This vehicle is a box surrounded by sensors and what they do is to interpret the environment in which they are. It also has a set of other sensors that shows exactly where the vehicle is.”

According to this, the company studies the possibility of rolling them on the highway. “These vehicles can live together and really coexist with motorized vehicles … It’s like a chameleon; it always go in all directions, every time and never get tired,” said Transdev Chile.
