Facebook demands an Israeli company for hacking

The team of lawyers of the social network presented allegations in California according to which NSO Group would have trespassed WhatsApp security illegally

Facebook, owner of the WhatsApp instant messaging application, filed a lawsuit before a California court in the United States on Tuesday against the Israeli company NSO Group for allegedly hacking their service to spy on more than a hundred journalists and Human Rights defenders.

WhatsApp indicated that between the past months of April and May it detected a new and sophisticated type of cyberattack using the video call services of the application.

Once the phone rang, malware was secretly transmitted to infect the target’s phone with a spying system, as reported by WhatsApp president Will Cathcart. The message service has indicated that during a period of 14 days more than 1,400 devices were attacked in 20 countries.

The lawsuit includes a request to block the company to prevent it from using the WhatsApp system, as well as those of Facebook. It has also urged governments and companies to implement measures to protect users from similar attacks.

“We are now looking to bring NSO to Justice under US law, including the Cyber Fraud and Abuse law,” Cathcart said. The accused company, meanwhile, has denied being related to the attacks.
