Brazil was invited to be a member of the OPEC

The invitation was formally made by Saudi Arabia, who stressed that for months they have intended to include the country ruled by Jair Bolsonaro

Saudi Arabia formally invited Brazil to be part of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

This was announced on Wednesday by the Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, who stressed that he had been pushing for months to achieve the admission in the organization.

Bolsonaro made the announcement from the Economic Forum held these days in Riyadh. He said the invitation was formally received after a round of meetings with the Saudi authorities, including the crown prince, Mohamed bin Salmán.

“We would like Brazil to enter OPEC, really. We have so much potential for that. We have more oil reserves than some countries that already make up OPEC”, said the current tenant of the Planalto Palace, according to the Brazilian newspaper.

OPEC, created in 1960, consists of fourteen countries, although since 2017 it maintains contacts with non-member states to control production and raise prices. The incorporation of Brazil would be the largest in recent years.

On the other hand, it was also announced an investment of 10,000 million dollars from Saudi Arabia in Brazil, among other agreements that have been closed between Riyadh and Brasilia on defense, industry, technology and culture. The agreement to facilitate visas for citizens of both countries, which will now be multiple entries with a stay of up to 90 days and validity of five years, stands out.

“Brazil offers great opportunities. No country in the world has what we have. We certainty have the best agricultural land in the world, so we can guarantee the lords (investors) their food security. We also have a huge market”, said Bolsonaro.
