Tim Cook opposes to the creation of a Libra-style digital currency

The executive president of the American company Apple said that digital currencies should be in the hands of countries

Tim Cook, chief executive of Apple Inc, said on Thursday that companies should not try to establish themselves in power by launching competing currencies into the market, referring to the Libra, the Facebook cryptocurrency scheduled to launch next June 2020.

Cook’s rejection as well as several executives of the PayPal online payment system, was noted after they did not appear at a meeting called by the Libra Association last Thursday, as reported in a report published in the Financial Times. The article also describes that PayPal was about to leave Libra because of its regulatory concerns.

According to this, the global skepticism that Facebook’s attempt has produced, in bringing a cryptocurrency to the great masses, has been sharpening since its announcement three months ago, in addition to generating rejection both in the regulatory and political spheres.

Although Apple is considered as an option to potentiate the world of cryptocurrencies, as it is one of the large technology companies with a wide range of financial services, these statements offered by its representative discard any option. Even though months ago the company had announced that it was attaching a cryptographic application to its system through the incorporation of CryptoKit to mobile devices.

Apparently Apple is not the only company that has taken a step back in its claims to support Libra de Facebook, others such as Visa, Mastercard and Stripe also remain limited.
