Facebook develops Calibra to operate its new cryptocurrency

The social network begins to consolidate its plans to launch its own digital currency and presented Calibra, a new brand of the firm that will have its digital portfolio as its first product

Facebook recently announced that Calibra and its new digital wallet will be available in Messenger, WhatsApp and will have a separate application for payments using its cryptocurrency Libra. It is estimated that the blockchain based service will be launched to the public in 2020.

The social network says: “Calibra will allow clients to send Libra to almost anyone who owns a smartphone, with the same ease and instantaneously as sending a text message for free.”

Calibra is designed exclusively to use new financial services. It is available globally. The tool is based on the technology of The Libra Association, a non profit organization based in Switzerland. Its members include MasterCard, PayPal, Uber, Visa and Stripe.

Once the system of Calibra is available, anyone can recharge their account through one of the payment providers that work as part of the association. When the amount in pounds is available clients could send it to any contact that uses any of the Facebook chat applications.

According to the brand, all operations will be free of commissions. It is worth emphasizing that Libra is designed to be stable and be the closest thing to a traditional currency but with the protection offered by blockchain technology. In addition, it has the same verification and anti-fraud processes used by banks and credit cards.
