Facial recognition system implemented in London streets

It is a tool used by security forces. Indeed, British authorities started to use it in the commercial streets of London

From China to the United Kingdom there are many countries that are opting for emerging technology to detect the movements of criminals and to act faster against possible attacks, and during the Christmas season alerts have increased.

The most recent attack has been on a Christmas market in Strasbourg and it has reawakened the fear of terrorism in Europe. For this reason, the UK police began using facial recognition to detect criminals among pedestrians in the commercial areas of the British capital.

London, like the rest of the European cities, is filled these days with hundreds of citizens carrying out the typical Christmas shopping. The system helps to  identify among all the walkers possible criminals who are being investigated for possible links with terrorist groups.

It is not the first time that this technology is used since it has been used  in other dates such as the celebration of the Notting Hill Carnival. Moreover, every Monday and Tuesday of the month of December citizens who transit through Soho, Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square and other commercial areas of the city will be scrutinized by facial recognition algorithms.

The cameras are fixed to the lampposts or in vans and use software developed by the Japanese firm NEC. The previous scan is then compared to a database in which the main suspects or investigated are found. In the event of a coincidence, the police officers patrolling the area must stop or simply take the person’s data.
