Coal maintains a strong position in energy field

The demand for coal increased last year and also during current year as published in a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA)

Coal is the fossil energy that emits most greenhouse gases. This is why  the International Energy Agency (IEA) denounced it in its annual report with the motto: “Much speech, but little change“.

After two years of decline, the global consumption of coal increased again last year and the production of electricity from coal also grew by 3%. The recovery in world growth has been considerable and 38% of electricity consumption is still based on coal.

In this connection, the IEA report confirms that the world resists making the necessary changes in the fight against climate change.

The report states: “Despite the significant attention given by the media to disinvestment and the rejection of coal, market trends are resistant to change.”

Consumption is expected to remain stable for the next five years, with a decline in Europe and the United States that will be offset by the advance in India and other Asian countries. In 2023, coal will continue to provide a quarter of the energy consumed in the world, compared to 27% today.
