MIT will create artificial intelligence division

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology plans to invest a billion dollars to found a university dedicated to the teaching of AI

On Tuesday, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) reported that it plans to invest about a billion dollars in the creation of a university, which will be dedicated to the exclusive training in artificial intelligence (AI), data science, among others.

It is planned that this institution, which will be called Stephen Schwarzman College of Computing, will open its doors in September 2019. However, the construction of the structure will end in 2022.

This school owes its name to the CEO and co-founder of Blackstone, a leading global asset manager, who has donated 350 million dollars to this effort.

MIT is committed to addressing all the global opportunities and challenges presented by the prevalence of computing and the development of artificial intelligence.

“The MIT Schwarzman College of Computing will be constituted by a global center for research and education in computing and an intellectual foundry for new and powerful artificial intelligence tools“, MIT president L. Rafael Reif said in a statement.

Reif labeled this university as one for “bilinguals of the future”, referring to students who currently work in other areas such as biology, chemistry, physics, history or linguistics, who use machine learning in their disciplines.

Thanks to the construction of this space, 50 vacancies will be created for the teaching. Half of these will be focused on the area of information technology, while the rest will be designated jointly by the Stephen Schwarzman College of Computing and other MIT departments.
