Volkswagen will increase battery manufacturing

The car maker wants to take production from 16 to 24 gigawatts hour per year through a Northvolt alliance

Volkswagen (VW) will increase the production capacity of its projected battery factory in the city of Salzgitter, according to the German car manufacturer.

Instead of the 16 initially planned, the plant will produce up to 24 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year.

The German group, which is considering carrying out this expansion after the first stage, will submit a construction request in March.

The Wolfsburg-based company will launch a battery factory together with its Swedish partner Northvolt. Among others, the objective of having its own production is to reduce the strong dependence with Asian suppliers for the equipment of electric cars.

The construction of the factory will begin in early 2021, and the planned date for the start of production in Salzgitter is in early 2024.
