User loses more than $ 16 million in bitcoin after updating Electrum wallet

The user is presumed to have downloaded an outdated version of the wallet that was vulnerable to phishing attacks

Cryptocurrency scams remain among the most common digital crimes. A recent case is that of a user who has lost more than $ 16 million in bitcoin after updating the Electrum wallet.

A tragedy for the user, since it is a considerable sum of money. In this regard, it was learned that the user tried to move the funds in BTC in an wallet inactive since 2017. But when proceeding to update the platform, the money disappeared.

The affected party declared that when downloading with the security measures requested by the software, the unfortunate event occurred, which has been classified as a phishing type attack (data theft).

Reactions were immediate on social networks, once the user published what happened. Electrum wallet developer Thomas Voegtlin confirmed that it was a phishing attack, and that so far “it is the largest scam perpetuated through software.”

For his part, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) reacted quickly, stating that he will blacklist the address used by the attackers and added: “In this way, if they reach the exchange, they will be frozen there and the team will duly inform the authorities.”
