Unemployment in Colombia falls to 14.3 %

The National Administrative Department of Statistics published the results for the month of July, which shows an improvement of 5.9 points compared to last year

The unemployment rate in Colombia fell to 14.3 % in July, a reduction of 5.9 percentage points with respect to the same month of the previous year, according to data published by the National Administrative Department of Statistics (NADS).

The new unemployment data corresponds to a total of 3.48 million unemployed people, 1.07 million less than in July 2020, when more than 4.5 million Colombians were unemployed as a result of the pandemic.

Urban unemployment, which includes the 13 cities and metropolitan areas of Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla, Bucaramanga, Manizales, Pereira, Cúcuta, Pasto, Ibagué, Montería, Cartagena and Villavicenciola, was 15 %, compared to 24.7 % July of the previous year.

For its part, the occupancy rate rose to 51.8 %, compared to 45.1 % in July of the previous year, which represents almost three million more employed people, to 20.9 million.

The vehicle trade and repair sector had the highest growth in terms of occupancy, with 644,000 new jobs, contributing 3.6 percentage points to the increase in Colombian occupancy. On the other hand, accommodation and food services increased the number of employed persons by 477,000 people compared to the same month of 2020, contributing 2.5 points to the growth in occupancy.
