Trump wiped out the Iowa Caucuses

Former US President Donald Trump (2017-2021), dominated the Iowa caucuses last Monday, marking the start of the Republican primaries for the White House. With almost 100% of the votes counted, Trump secured victory with an impressive 51.1%, leaving his two main rivals in the shadows.

Ron DeSantis, governor of Florida, came in second with 21.2%, while former U.S. ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, came in third with 19.1%. Tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, fourth with 7.6%, announced his withdrawal from the primaries, backing Trump on his way to the nomination.

Trump’s overwhelming victory in the caucuses, listed as the coldest in Iowa history, was so shocking that news outlets like CNN, NBC and Fox projected their victory just half an hour after the polling centers opened. Even before many voters cast their ballots, the projections already heralded Trump’s victory, surprising those present in the caucuses.

Trump’s speech, delivered at the Iowa Event Center in Des Moines, began with a call for unity: “Our country must unite. We want to unite.” However, this conciliatory message soon gave way to anti-immigrant rhetoric, with Trump warning of a supposed “invasion” on the border with Mexico.

Trump’s celebration brought together his supporters, including Sharon Anderson, who traveled from Tennessee to witness the event. The victory did not surprise Anderson, who stated that “Donald Trump said he was going to win and he always does what he says.” Derek Davis, a voter present in Iowa, interpreted the victory as a ray of hope for democracy and the Constitution, describing Trump as the “heartbeat that represents us all.”
